{"id":4567,"date":"2018-12-04T21:48:09","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T02:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/?p=4567"},"modified":"2018-12-04T21:48:20","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T02:48:20","slug":"renix-knock-sensor-replacement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/renix-knock-sensor-replacement\/","title":{"rendered":"Renix Knock Sensor replacement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>How to replace the knock sensor on the Jeep Renix engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The knock sensor is used by the Renix engine control system to fine tune the ignition timing.\u00a0 If it hears knock it will back off on the timing a bit. It will run the ignition timing as far advanced as it can to get the most power and fuel economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>If the sensor fails or is damaged, it will read zero knock and the engine will run the default ignition curve.\u00a0 This may allow too much advance and cause the engine to knock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My dad&#8217;s Wagoneer has a 4.7 stroker motor had has developed a taste for high octane fuel to limit knock. He thought it was because of his stroker motor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However testing with Nick in Time&#8217;s REM module showed no reading from the knock sensor. I decide to replace it.\u00a0 In the past I had not been able to find these replacements but I was able to find the newer GM style available on Amazon. Part number: <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KUHia9\">KS99<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The knock sensor is located on the driver side of the block near the oil pan.\u00a0 It is best accessed from below.\u00a0 The connector looks like a fuel injection connector and is held by a clip in the same way. I used a pick to remove the clip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I then unscrewed the old sensor from the block and saw that it was obviously broken.\u00a0 24MM wrench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KUHia9\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"343\" height=\"609\" src=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knocksensorsnewold.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4568\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knocksensorsnewold.jpg 343w, http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knocksensorsnewold-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>II then threaded in the mounting stud for the new sensor. 24 M again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KUHia9\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"315\" height=\"560\" src=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knockstud.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4569\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knockstud.jpg 315w, http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knockstud-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the stub in place I clipped the new sensor to the connector. Then I slipped it in place on the connector and tightened the retaining nut. Loctite is recommended. 13MM wrench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KUHia9\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"315\" height=\"560\" src=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knocksensornew.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4570\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knocksensornew.jpg 315w, http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/knocksensornew-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I then started the engine and as soon as I revved it up, I saw a knock reading on the REM.\u00a0 I took it for a short test drive while monitoring both knock and ignition timing.\u00a0 Both looked int he proper range.\u00a0 I will give it a try on lower octane fuel soon to see how the knock readings look.
