{"id":5247,"date":"2019-11-11T20:56:54","date_gmt":"2019-11-12T01:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/?p=5247"},"modified":"2019-11-11T20:56:59","modified_gmt":"2019-11-12T01:56:59","slug":"944-loss-of-oil-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/944-loss-of-oil-pressure\/","title":{"rendered":"944 loss of oil pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our race at AMP was cut short due to a sudden loss of oil pressure.&nbsp; We tried to diagnose at the track, but the crack pulley was tight and the oil level was correct so we knew a removal and disassembly was next on the diagnostic list.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the shop, I pulled the engine and dropped the oil pan.&nbsp; Inside, where it should not be, was part of the oil pick up tube.&nbsp; The remainder was still bolted to the block.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"457\" height=\"609\" src=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/oilpickup-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5248\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/oilpickup-1.jpg 457w, http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/oilpickup-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>I realized we have had several failures lately that seemed to be caused by vibrations.&nbsp; So, I decided to take a close look at the balance shaft timing.  Sure enough, one of the balance shafts was off a couple of teeth.&nbsp; This likely happened when I was rushing to change the water pump before the Road Atlanta race.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am going to change the seals on both balance shafts while the motor is out so I will make sure the timing is correct before I reinstall the engine,&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also discovered that the rotor button had failed, However the engine was running fine with no evidence of lack of spark.&nbsp; This will be replaced with a Bosh unit.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"457\" height=\"609\" src=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/burnedrotor.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5249\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/burnedrotor.jpg 457w, http:\/\/mikestrawbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/burnedrotor-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspection of the rod bearings shows very minor wear.\u00a0 Looks like we got lucky and shut it down in time to avoid major failure.\u00a0 I will have the replacement bearing Calico coated before installing them.<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our race at AMP was cut short due to a sudden loss of oil pressure.&nbsp; We tried to diagnose at the track, but the crack pulley was tight and the oil level was correct so we knew a removal and disassembly was next on the diagnostic list.
