Registering domain names is now a very easy and straight forward process.  There are many internet domain registration services available.  I use GoDaddy.com.

Despite their "edgy" commercials featuring Candice Michelle, they are a solid company with great products and good value.

Here is how to register a domain name.

  1. Chose a name that represents the benefits you wish to provide
  2. Search the domain registrations to see if that name is taken
  3. If that name is available, then add it to your shopping cart.
  4. If the name you want is not available, then GoDaddy will offer several alternate choices that may be close enough to what you want.
  5. Once you have selected you main available domain name, you may also want to lock in the associated names like the dot net and dot org extensions of the same domain name.
Domain name availability can vary form time to time.  There is a popular scam going on right now where companies register large volumes of domain names in hopes of finding one that gets free traffic.  They then cancel them before the refund grace period expires.  So they tie up some good names for a few days at a time.  If the domain name you want is unavailable, try again later to see if it has freed up.  GoDaddy also offers a service to help you try to scoop up expiring names.  This might be worth the cost of the name you want is critical to your business.
