Installing a Radiator with a cap on my Renix XJ
While I had my engine out, I decided to upgrade the cooling system. I have always had trouble with the pressure bottle and getting the cap to seal. I had already ordered a new cap when I decided to make the change.
I decided to update to the new style radiator with a cap and delete the heater control valve. I have already partially deleted the valve but kept the T going to the pressure bottle.
I used an Autozone A1193 radiator. I chose this one because it has a port for the electric fan switch from the old radiator. I had to get a new radiator cap to match. https://amzn.to/32HC2OK
I also updated the pipe coming out of the water pump to the new style so it matched the new style hoses. https://amzn.to/2LDs8Im I used the Dorman 56398 Water Pump Inlet Tube
See my previous article for the heater hose part numbers. http://mikestrawbridge.com/blog/2019/04/heater-valve-delete-jeep-cherokee-xj/
One thing I forgot about until I started up the engine was the overflow bottle. There is not much room under the hood of my Jeep so I used a tubular catch can. https://amzn.to/30betRE
I also got a new fan shroud for the mechanical fan since mine was broken: https://amzn.to/2QBjDlN
I found it much easier to fill and purge the system through the radiator cap than through the pressure bottle. I used my Lisle Funnel https://amzn.to/31F3H2R to fill and get the air out.
I found one of the clips of the air box hits the filler neck on the radiator. So I just removed it. The box seems to seal well enough without it.
